SOCIAL STATUS AND THE SPENDING OF LEISURE TIME AT JARUN LAKE

For the questionnaire we used a random sample of 281 respondents (52.3% women and 47.7% men). We divided Jarun Lake into its three geographical locations which form natural wholes: the small lake, the regatta course and Trešnjevka Island, along with the large lake. We interviewed the respondents along the course, beach and in the catering establishments (cafes, restaurants). Of the extracurricular activities, we were particularly interested in swimming, visits to cafes/restaurants, inline-skating, fishing, strolling and barbecuing. These results represent a "frozen" picture of the moment and contain particular methodological deficiencies. For this reason, they should be taken with a certain reserve.

The results from all respondents show substantially better ones than the state's average in terms of education, work status, average monthly income (of those employed and retired), the number of automobiles and ownership of property. These results are an initial indication of the better social status of visitors to Jarun.

EDUCATION
5.3% of the respondents had an elementary school education, 48.1% had a secondary school education, and 46.6% even a university education (including college and university education and postgraduate education).
WORK STATUS
66.2% of the respondents were employed, 7.5% were unemployed, 13.9% were retired, 8.9% are studying, and 3.6% of the respondents replied to the category 'other'.
AVERAGE MONTHLY INCOME
39.6% of the respondents receive up to 3500 kuna in monthly income, 35.2% receive between 3500-5000 kuna, and 25.1% receive more than 5000 kuna.
NUMBER OF CARS
19.6% of the respondents had no car, 57.9% have one car, and 22.5% have 2 or more cars.
OWNERSHIP OF PROPERTY (house/flat)
83.3% of the respondents own their own property, 1.8% live in state-owned property, 13.5% rent, and 1.4% responded to the category 'other'.

ACTIVITIES
Of the results linked to the main activity that people do during their leisure time spent on Jarun, we would like to single out the following:

  • SWIMMERS
This group is in keeping with the Jarun average in all categories except for the question regarding ownership of property (flat/house). This group has the most respondents who live in rented flats (21.7%) and state-owned flats (5%). Also, they have the most number of those employed (78.3%).
  • VISITORS TO CATERING ESTABLISHMENTS
This group is among those are the most educated and have the highest social status. On average, they spend the most during their visit to Jarun (105 kuna), they have a higher income bracket (46.7% have an income of more than 5000 kuna), and they have the greatest number of cars (47.4% have 2 or more cars).
  • IN-LINE SKATERS
This group contains the most educated (college and university education) respondents (57.8%). However, there is also the greatest number of unemployed among them (10.9%), which can also be tied in to the fact that most in-line skaters are younger from the rest of the respondents.
  • FISHERMEN
This group has the least number of educated respondents (14.8%), the lowest income (68% have income up to 3500 kuna, and only 12% have income over 5000 kuna), and on average they spend the least during their stay at Jarun (27 kuna).
  • STROLLERS
This group shares the same "fate" as the fishermen group in two categories related to work status: they have a higher number of those retired (37.0% among the fishermen, and 24.4% among the strollers) and the lowest number of students among them (they share last place with 3.7%). Also, strollers have the greatest number of respondents who selected the category 'other' regarding the question of work status (7.3%). Along with this data, they also have the greatest number of people owning either a flat or house (90.2%) and the least number of those who live in rented flats/houses (7.3%).
  • BARBEQUERS
This group has the highest average spending during their visit to Jarun (65.5% of these respondents spend more than 50 kuna). Also, barbequers have the greatest average of student population (17.2%)

  • LOCATIONS
With the results related to the Jarun locales where the respondents can be found, we would like to single out the following details:

  • SMALL LAKE
This location has respondents with the greatest monthly income (40.0% have between 3500-5000 kuna, and 29.2% more than 5000 kuna) and the most number of cars (26.1% have 2 or more cars). As for work status, the small lake has the most unemployed respondents (9.7%) and students (16.1%).
  • TREŠNJEVKA ISLAND AND REGATTA COURSE
A location where education is lower than with the other two locations (9.3% have completed elementary school, and only 39.5% have high or higher education), the number of cars the respondents had here was less than average (26.7% have no car, and 19.8% have 2 or more cars), and the average spending during their visit to Jarun is lower (51.2% spends up to 20 kuna, and 5.8% more than 50 kuna). This location also has the least employed (61.6%), and has 1% more retired respondents than on the large lake (18.6%).
  • LARGE LAKE
A location with the highest percentage of higher-educated people (53.9% of the respondents have college and university education). Mention should also be made that this location has the greatest number of those employed (68.6%).
