The
book "Andreja Kulunčić: Umjetnost za društvene promjene / Art for
Social Changes" provides a selection of twelve projects of artist
Andreja Kulunčić made in the period from 2000 until 2013 in the
framework of various Croatian and international exhibitions and
art events.
In
addition to representing the work of this important Croatian artist
with an international reputation, the book is a kind of textbook
and an introduction to the art of social practice: a specific form
of collaborative artistic practice in which the artist responds
to the specific social situation activating its participants to
conscious reflection and change.
Through
a rich visual material and an introductory essay and texts witten
by Irena Bekić, the book presents the artist's work which
deals with themes of social justice, the position of women in contemporary
society, the problem of illegalized emigrants, prison conditions,
unfavorable treatment of workers, the degree of tolerance towards
others, the problem of stigmatization of psychiatric patients, commercialization
of tourism, attitude towards reading and book, the possibilities
of self-organizing communities, etc.
The book was designed by Dejan Dragosavac-Ruta, Andreja's
longtime collaborator.
The
book is equally addressing professional audiences as well as anyone
interested in social engagement towards a more tolerant, more sensitive,
more aware and more creative coexistence in the community.
