Today Egypt, where only three per cent of land is inhabited, is once again undertaking a bold project that would in effect create a new Nile delta. With an artificial riverbed Egypt is taking a new development axis - from the times of the Pharaohs on the state developed only in the north around Cairo and Alexandria. Today the south, which for centuries was neglected and forgotten, is becoming a Promised Land. Canal of Toshka or the Sheikh Zayed Canal is the building block of the project; the artery that will bring 25 millions cubic meters of water per day to cultivate about 2,268sq km (a bit less than the area of Luxembourg) in Toshka and New Valley region.
