John Cockett, Butchers, Hawes. (His son, John David Cocket, in the photos) "There just haven't been the casual customers, the tourists. Early on, in March and April, business was pretty desperate. We've managed to keep all our staff working, but with reduced hours. The price of meat hasn't changed at all - prices have been maintained because the export market has collapsed, and so there's still enough to go round the country. The really sad thing about it is the dreadful waste of healthy animals. The vaccination idea seems to be out, because of the danger to the export market, which in any case has disappeared completely. What we all feel, is that nothing seems to have been learnt from the outbreak in 1967. Surely there was some research done after that? 30 years later, its just been forgotten". |
