International Public Discussions on Journalism and the Media

The Open Society Institute - Slovenia is continuing to organise Journalistic Evenings, a series of monthly public discussions on journalism and the media, in the framework of its Media Programme.

Journalistic Evenings are chaired by Boris Čibej, journalist in foreign desk of Delo daily newspaper. The aim is to promote journalism as a serious, complex, responsible, and sometimes even enticing occupation. The evenings are meant both for journalists and students of journalism and for the wider public with an interest in cultural affairs.

Besides journalists and media experts from Slovenia, foreign journalists and experts also take part in the discussions, which enables the exchange of experiences, knowledge and opinions about journalistic work, the functioning of the media, the freedom of the media, media legislation, media business, journalistic solidarity, and so forth.

Together with other projects (advanced study scholarships for journalists abroad, seminars for journalists, research projects into the functioning of the media, and the Media Watch bulletin), organised by the Open Society Institute - Slovenia, Journalistic Evenings have contributed to a more accomplished journalism and media culture in Slovenia, and to the development of the professional community.

Journalistic Evenings take place in the Škuc Gallery, Stari Trg 21, Ljubljana, Slovenia, under the patronage of the Škuc Club. From April 1997 to July 1998, the Open Society Institute - Slovenia organised 15 international journalistic evenings, in which Boris Čibej hosted some 30 domestic and foreign journalists and media experts.
