ŠKUC SOCIETY
ŠKUC is one of the most significant organisations of non-profitable cultural production in Slovenia. It dates back to the times of the first radical student movements in Ljubljana (1968), but it was officially established on January 31, 1972. Ever since its foundation, the activities of ŠKUC are divided according to various cultural domains in several departments which subdivide in sections.
ŠKUC Gallery operates since 1978. It was founded as a response to the dominant exhibitory policy of established galleries in Slovenia. In the eighties it became a centre of alternative (sub)culture, and thus, even aggravated, its relation to the institutional culture. In the last few years, the gallery’s programme is open to various artistic orientations, exhibiting works by young Slovenians and international artists.
Concerts and festivals are organised by ROPOT, ART ROCK, BUBA and AFK sections. Among them are: Rock in Opposition (1980-1984); the Coast Scene (1987-1995; still operative); and NOVI ROCK (New Rock), organised yearly since 1981. Music genres played by the presented groups, comprise everything from rock and punk to jazz, ethnic and classical music.
Film production started within the centre for student films, producing experimental and alternative films between 1973 and 1985, and then developed into a professional production under the name of EMOTION FILM (since 1986).
ŠKUC publishes several magazines and other publications: Revolver (a magazine for culture and politics with homoerotic orientation); Kekec (a gay tabloid); Lesbo (political, social, cultural & lesbian magazine); and Rock Vibe (a magazine for rock and alternative music).
Organising, raising of consciousness and mutual informing of different marginal social groups runs since the mid-eighties:
