NGO for art production and publishing

Subkulturni azil Maribor aims to cover in most direct ways the blind territories in the field of humanities and arts, proposing new models and opening gaps in the borderlines.

"Subcultural Asylum" has been producing documents and archives of contemporary cultural production, mainly the subcultures. "Sub" carries the meaning "below" - exactly to the degree where every Subject is sub-jected to the signifier. "Culture" is to be deducted from its Latin roots, "colere" meaning simply "the tilling of field".

"Like democracy, information is not a right but a practice, not a dream but a passion." (Serge Daney) In our translation and re-presentation it means> various activities of Subkulturni azil do not proceed from a dictate of standard cultural programmes but are developed in line with natural needs of those who edit, organise, write, sing, etc. Producing practice & artistic passion.

Subkulturni azil Maribor was registered as a non-profit NGO for cultural production and publishing in 1999 and as such formally incorporated both basic sections which had been developed from the 80s > the Front Rock record label edition and a Frontier book collection. Continuous development brought concrete results: more that 30 recordings (mostly underground rock, punk, ska, and since 2000 also ethno and acoustic music) and around 31 titles of original texts in the field of literature and humanities (sociology of culture, anthropology, ethnology, musicology, philosophy, aesthetics, media theory).

Besides publishing the activities of Subkulturni azil include cultural management, artistic production and reproduction, research and experimental development in the field of social sciences and humanities, distribution and promotion of (sub)cultural goods, conceiving and implementation of international cultural projects.

We do not cry over the situation and reality, which exists as it does, and presents our working environment. To our view it is of utmost importance that the presentation of an idea or product - which is quite the same - we should get closely acquainted with reality and its means. As we should also utilise the same reality and its means. Without this attitude the worlds would be splitting up at a very quick pace. Moreover, the velocity kills.
