Times of conflict ("war") show the media industry to be an important frontline for mobilisation and "information warfare."The 7sea_chickenz is a network of individuals, most of whom work in thefields of media and art, who came together as the NATO bombings of Serbiabegan, both to show their support of fellow media workers in the"independent" media in Serbia and elsewhere, and with a common awareness ofthe need for autonomous information sources in times of conflict. They neither subscribe to nor endorse any common ideology nor claim torepresent any specific political position. They each carry their ownindividual viewpoints and enjoy emphasizing their differences of opinion. The name 7sea_chickenz comes from a kind of canned fish ("sea chicken,"manufactured in Japan) provided by relief organizations during the Bosnianconflict, and highly prized by its recipients. We added the "7" to the"seas" to indicate that the issues pertaining to a free and independentinformation infrastructure are global and ongoing, and not at all limitedto the present-day Balkans. We were incidentally quite happy with the association of chickens withtimidity. The 7sea_chickenz first activities have been to try and fill some gaps inthe Japanese mass media's coverage of the NATO/Serbian conflict with usefularticles and information sources, including establishing close links to theFreeB92 and the Japanese HelpB92 group, translating many texts from theBalkan Sunflowers project, conducting fundamental research on volunteergroups and donation routes within Japan, etc.We want to function as an antenna transmitting positive ways to navigateindividual information autonomy, apart from the volatile streams of themass media.
