About Us

Vasovalci (nightly revelers) is a men's vocal group from Ljubljana which is the capital city of Slovenia(description). We are twelve singers, young and mostly unmarried men and our leader is Janez Kotar (description). This season is the seventh since our beginning (description). We sing unaccompanied songs for man choirs. Our repertoire consists Slovenian folksongs, artistic, religious, black spiritual and popular songs (description). Our name arises from surprise singing under girl's windows in the middle of the night (description). We perform all over Slovenia and have sung even abroad (description).

We are from Vic (a part of Ljubljana) where we also have our seat. A part of our name is choir but in act there are not enough singers to be a real choir. We are all not even bachelors any more. Two are married, but sometimes, when there is a promising opportunity, they do not want to admit this fact. Though we have sung for whole six years together, our average age is twenty-five.

The singers mostly have not changed since our beginning. The overwhelming majority is the same since the first rehearsal. Only a few have lost courage on the path and left us, but on the other hand new ones have always taken their places. So the number has been around twelve all the whole time. Our conductor is one of the first members and he has conducted us the whole time. These facts are not common in other Slovenian choirs and therefor we are proud of that.

Our first rehearsal was in the end of 1990. Back then we did not have any specific wishes and expectations, we were singing for ourselves. Slowly our repertoire was growing and then our first performances came, later also concerts and tours. To celebrate the fifth year together, we organized a special concert for all our friends.

Our first songs were folksongs. They mean the major part of the repertoire for groups like us in our country. There are songs for every occasion, so we can fulfill many listeners' wishes. Later we learned other kinds of songs, as are artistic, religious, black spirituals and lately even popular songs are among them. The last type of songs is not so common for groups like ours is.

We could write a novel about how we were choosing our name; the process was long and complicated. Meanwhile we became known as a choir singing late in the night under girls' windows, what was common in the past in the Slovenian countryside, but nowadays it is unusual, especially in our cities. We tried with different names, but none sounded right. Finally we named ourselves Vasovalci (nightly revelers). It is quite the proper name for what we are doing.

We have sung all over Slovenia and distances have never bothered us, in spite of the weather and other unpleasant conditions. We perform at all kind of occasions where-ever we are invited. Weddings, serenades, celebrations, funerals and concerts are some examples. Our singing abilities were heard also abroad and we also love to perform for Slovenians living abroad.
