Vasovanje (nocturnal visits to sweethearts) is an old Slovene custom. In the evenings the boys would gather in the village and sing under the windows of the girls to soften their hearts or to prove their love.
Tradition is not dead, at least with Vasovalci not. It is true that we seldom find ourselves in a village as we are all from the town. Thus instead in a front-yard we often sing under a block of flats. Usually all the neighbours wake up before the surprised hosts, if only they notice the singing is not from the neighbour’s radio. It all usually continues with an invitation for a drink. If someone does not want to open the window we are prepared with a song for such occasions, too.
Girls, do not sleep too tight, you never know, when Vasovalci can appear under your window - and - your fridge should not be empty.
