documenta meets radio/radio meets documenta
Hessischer Rundfunk (hr2)
The arts have been addressing themselves
to the medium of radio since it was first
invented. Composers and writers in particular
have succeeded in expanding their expressive range either on the radio,
or by using the radio.
In co-operation with documenta X, the
radio station Hessischer Rundfunk/Hörfunk is placing the medium of radio at the disposal
of contemporary artists, with their respective concepts of structure and experiences
of reality. Thus disciplines that at first glance may seem to be irreconcilable - the fine
arts being dependent on optical signals, radio on acoustic ones - are able to find out
what aspects they have in common under shared circumstances.
Six of the artists invited to documenta
X will create a radio feature in keeping with their own ideas. The resulting six features
will be broadcast by Hessischer Rundfunk on its second radio channel, hr2.
Given the open nature of the work on
this project, the dates when these features will first be broadcast cannot be fixed in
advance. Should their concepts demand it, the respective artists are to be allowed
to intervene in scheduled radio programs. Towards the end of documenta X, however, all
six features will be broadcast in close succession within the program of hr2's "Radio-Kultursommer '97".
