documenta - what is it?
documenta is one of the mostrespectable exhibitions of contemporary art, taking place every five years inKassel, Germany. Since documenta 5 in 1972, each exhibition concept is done bya different curator. documenta X in 1997 is directed by Mme. Catherine David.

documenta X - when?
The exhibition runs from June 21st to September 28th 1997(i.e. 100 days),open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., box office and information from 9.30 a.m. to7.30 p.m.

How many artists are participating in the show?
There are around 250 participants. A special 100 days - 100 guestsprogram takes place, featuring personalities who represent nearly all categories of cultural activities and philosophies. The participating artsits had been announced at the press conference on June 19th.

Where does the exhibition takes place?
documenta X is located at several places in the city of Kassel, running a "parcours". The tour starts at the Kulturbahnhof (former central station, exhibition building, movie theatre (Bali), where thedX film program are shown and the introduction lectures are held)continued through a pedestrian subway (Kulturbahnhof and Scheidemannplatz), viapedestrian zone (Treppenstrassee) to the exhibition buildings (Fridericianum,Ottoneum) and documenta-Halle (events programs). It ends up at Orangerie and theriverside area (Fuldaaue).
Tickets give access to all exhibition places,except movie-shows and theatre venues.

Is there artwork open-air?
Yes, you find artwork open-air at Kulturbahnhof, in the pedestriansubways alongside the "parcours", at the sides of Friedrichsplatz andin Fuldaaue.

Children (-6) have free access.
Price concessions are available forschool and college students, pensioners (gentlemen 63+ , ladies 62+), socialsecurity claimants, unemployed persons, those performing military or civiliannational services and disabled persons.
Certificates are checked at theentrance of the exhibition buildings.

Do you offer any products with the documenta-Logo?
Baseball-caps (DM 19,90), T-shirts (DM 24,90), pins (DM4,90), pencils (DM 2,50), coffee cups (DM 8,50), boxes for business cards (DM 24,00), candy boxes (DM 13,00), umbrellas (DM 28,90), SIGG drinkingbottle (DM 34,90), magnets (DM 2,90), scetchbooks (DM 9,90), posters (DM 10,00), post cards (DM 1,50), and stickers (DM 1,00) are offered in special sales booths of the CantzVerlag at Friedrichsplatz and the Kulturbahnhof.

Can I buy any art work?
There is a documenta X- Artedition by 14 dX-artists, consisting ofvery different objects, for example graphic works, objects of syntheticmaterial, post cards or a Book with CD ROM. The Edition is limited, 50 to500 copies, prices range between DM 75,00 and 2.500,00.
In addition postcards, showing motivs of the exhibitons, are offered at the bookstoreWalther König.
At the sales booths for the dX souvenirs you can buy pins by Carsten Nicolai, the KINO-T-shirt by Peter Friedl and the game "Global Village" by Josef Legrand.

Do you offer guided tours?
There are regular tours, starting at Fridericianum, Kulturbahnhof andottoneum monday to friday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., saturday and sunday at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. There are guided "parcours"-walks as well asguided tours for special-interest groups.

Guided group (max. 20 persons) tours will cost DM 7,- p.p. and hour, at leastDM 80,-
Students and the elderly are charged DM 70,- per guided hour.
For group tours please register 5 days in advance.

If you prefer a specific person as guide, please register in advance.

Where is the meeting point for guided tours?
There is a box office at the Kulturbahnhof (former central station). The guided tours services center is situated behind the Fridericianum.

Is there further information services supplied by the guiding service?
Yes, you may attend the introduction lectures at the Bali Movies (at theKulturbahnhof), dealing with historical aspects of documenta as well as the "highlights"of documenta X.
They take place regularly from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. (DM5,-)

Groups please book in advance. You may as well book a complete lecture event(DM 450,-)

Do you have something like a VIP service?
Yes. Matthias Arndt and guiding-services organize individual programs including lodging, transfer traveling, individual shuttle service, personal attendance, and special guided tours.

Do you offer special guided tours for children?
Dr. Evelyn Lehmann organizes a Kinder-documenta and offer special guidedtours for children, phone +49 (0)561 937 77. The guiding service offersguided group tours for children. Special prams/baby carriages can be lent in theexhibition buildings.

Any other events?
documenta X will include a daily film program, shown at Bali-movie theatreat Kulturbahnhof. Each day at 10 p.m. one of the films produced by thedocumenta X are shown. These films can be purchased as video edition inKassel.

The 100 days - 100 guests program features a lectures/eventsprogram each day. Artists, philosophers, economists, filmmakers... are invitedby Catherine David to discuss with the public at documenta-Halle. Entrance between 6.30 and 7 p.m. All dX tickets give access to the lectures/events. To order the program contact 0561- 70 72 70 or fax 0561- 707 27 39.

On the first weekend in September (5. - 7.9.) the dX "Theatre Outlines" will take place.

Kassel city authorities offer a series of events (music, entertainment etc.) during the summer.

How much time does it take to visit the dX?
Depending on individual purposes, we recommend at least 4 to 5 hours. Thebetter way to do it: Stay for a couple of days and enjoy the exhibition.

Am I expected to reserve tickets?
No! At the documenta X box offices, you can buy any kind of tickets valuablefor any time of entering.

Which visitor services are offered at Friedrichsplatz?
You can buy tickets, the documenta x book, the short guide, get informations about documenta and accomodations. There is also a book store, a bank, a branch of the tourist information, a sales booth for dX souvenirs and a variety of gastronomical offers.

Is there a restaurant or café in the exhibition area?
The café in the documenta-Halle offers snacks from 10 a.m. until10 p.m.

May I take photos of the art works?
Yes, as long as you do not use a flash or tripod. Exceptions need to be approved.
You are not allowed to carry anybag bigger than DIN A4 within the exhibition area.

Can you help me with finding a hotel in Kassel?
Sorry, no. No hotel reservation can be done by documenta GmbH!

What about low budget accommodation for young people?

Where do I get a press accreditation?
The press centre is located on the parking lot in front of Dock 4 centre, Untere Karlstr. 4, where you can get the accreditation presenting your press card or a written confirmation of your editor. Opening times 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Which publications about the documenta X are available?
The documenta X book includes articles by dX artists and on contemporary art since 1945 (DM 90,00 at the exhibition, bookstroe hardcover edtion DM 148,00). The exhibition guide (DM 24,00 only at the exhibiton) explaining the exhibition objects and artists .

To get deeper into conceptual thinking, ask for "documenta-documents"(Cantz Verlag, Stuttgart) in your local bookshop. Containing essays from Mme.Catherine David and others, it is a discursive travel about the philosophy ofdX. There have been three releases up to now. After the documenta has drawn toa close, an additional instalment of the documents will be issued in which theresults of the program events during the documenta will be summarized and thedocumenta X team will reflect upon the 100 days.

The dX orientation map facilitates the journey to and within Kassel.

The dX parcours map shows the artworks' location alongside the parcours. You find it enclosed in the exhibition guide, but you can also get it seperately for DM 2,00 at the documenta X information at Friedrichsplatz, the documenta-Halle and the Kulturbahnhof.

Will there be a catalogue?
documenta X has released the documenta X book (DM 148,- clothbinding, ISBN: 3-89322-911-6, DM 90,- cardboard binding,) and the exhibitionguide explaining the exhibition objects and artists (DM 24,- only at theexhibition, no bookstore edition) including an overview of the exhibiting artsits. The dX parcours map including an overview of the exhibiting artsits is also available seperately for DM 2,00.

How much is a train ticket to Kassel?
Deutsche Bahn AG offers a special ticket : Two persons (to Kassel andback) are charged DM 99,- (101-300km), or DM 149,- (300+km). These tickets areavailable since June 1st. Please make sure you get a dX-stamp on the train ticket, otherwise it will not be valid for the return journey.

Which sponsors support the documenta X?
The documenta X exhibition is promoted and organized by documenta und Museum Fridericianum Veranstaltungs GmbH, a non-profit company owned and financed by the city of Kassel and the State of Hessen, with additional supportfrom the Kulturstiftung der Länder, using funds from the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Deutsche Bahn is the official carrier for documenta X, and will be sponsoring documenta X through the renovation of exhibition spaces at Kassel Central Station and by providing advertising and communication services for the exhibition. Joint tickets to travel to Kassel and entrance into the exhibition can be bought at DB ticket offices. Additional activities aresponsored by Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe. Assistance with film and video projects has been received from Sony Deutschland, the third of the three principal sponsors. Other sponsors are Binding Brauerei AG, Deutsche Städte-Reklame, IBM Deutschland GmbH, SBK Software + Systeme GmbH Kassel and Volkswagen.
