Urban
Festival Zagreb 2004 [exUFexTENSION].
Organized by BLOK
Jarun,
an oasis for rest and recreation for a large number
of Zagreb residents, is not only a place where people
go to spend their leisure time, participate in extracurricular
activities, but also a place of varied social diversification
considering the social and economic status of its users.
Proceeding from the notion that what we call leisure
time is in fact very controlled and strictly structured,
in the project "A Place Under the Sun" the artist conducts
a survey among the visitors to Jarun in order to confirm
her observations on the all the more distinct divisions
apparent during this time of transition, about the loss
of public space and the "tying in" of leisure time with
the institution of sports activities, visits to cafes,
restaurants…
The
results of the survey are shown on new "maps" of the
Jarun area which show the ordered distribution as a
consequence of the socio-economic conditioned selection
of space and time for leisure time. The project consists
of three socio-economic maps applied to the existing
Jarun maps and mini-actions in handing out fliers.
"I
have lived near the lake for more than 5 years and
almost daily I can see the way in which the lake and
its surroundings are used. What really stood out was
the change in socially "accepted" codes of behavior
(dress, types of recreation, appearance) and the grouping
of visitors to the lake according to social status.
How everything, including leisure time, is subject
to a set of rules. We try to spend this time in the
way that is most socially acceptable to the social
group we belong to." A.Kuluncic
