pETER Purg currently leads the New Media module in the Digital//Media Arts and Practices graduate//postgraduate programme at the School of Arts, University of Nova Gorica, where he acts as Associate Professor and expert across realms of digital culture, arts and media. He is a member of the UNG Research Center for the Humanities and from 2021 to 2025 he was Dean of the School of Humanities. Having obtained a PhD in media art, communication science and literary studies from the University of Erfurt (Germany), his current academic work spans artistic research, ecological humanities and media ecology, as well as art–science–technology collaboration. His artistic and curatorial practice ranges from performance to participatory and community-based art, public-space interventions and intermedia installations, often engaging ecological, technological and social questions. He is also active in cultural and higher education policy, curriculum development, evaluation and quality assurance.

Currently he co-leads the UNG team in the Horizon MSCA project MAKERS - Mobilizing Arts, Knowledge and Education to Reclaim Human Agency (2026-2030) and is a member of Liminal Research. He leads the ARIS bilateral project with Cornell University (USA) on Investigative and Community Art as Ecological Avant-garde (2024-2026). Within the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica – Gorizia pETER Purg led the curatorial board of the 26th international festival of contemporary/media art Pixxelpoint 2025. From 2022 to 2025 he led two ECoC official programs, the media-arts+performance series PostMobility and the art-science-DIY lab xMobil; all 33 productions are now reflected in a program book (PDF, EN/SI). He was a member of the scientific and artistic committee of the international conference Taboo – Transgression – Transcendence (TTT) 2025, and is a collaborator on the Danube Interreg project DECORATOR. His current artistic research takes the form of a performance series HydraHacks (Susak Expo, Sajeta Festival, Venice and Dubrovnik in 2026; POM Fukuoka Japan and Aqua Festival Staranzano in 2027).

In the last decade pETER Purg led the acclaimed MAST - Module in Art, Science and Technology project (DG Connect) and led the School of Arts' teams in two large-scale projects, KONS - Platform for Investigative Arts (EU Cohesion) and DIVA - Art:Biz Innovation Ecosystem (Interreg SI-IT). Beforehand he successfully led international projects across art, culture and academia such as ADRIART (Advancing Digitally Renewed Interactions in Art Teaching), IDEATE (Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurial Application for Transforming Education in High Technologies) as well as the award-winning HiLoVv (Hidden Lives of Venice on Video) and was Slovenian team lead in the PAIC - Participatory Art for Invisible Communities, EmindS (Erasmus+) and TV Free Europe (Creative Europe) projects.

Since 2014 pETER Purg has been coordinating ADRIART.CE, a CEEPUS-supported network of a dozen art academies from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, North Macedonia, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia. 2006-2012 he acted as programme director of Media Production Management international study programme at IAM-CMPM (Slovenia) for Middlesex University (UK). He co-founded Xcenter, a hub of art, science and innovative technologies in Nova Gorica and a major node of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica – Gorizia.

In 2011 he was awarded "Prometheus of Science for Excellence in Communication" by The Slovenian Science Foundation; he acts as member of juries and boards in and between art and science such as Creative Europe, Horizon and S+T+ARTS of the European Commission. pETER Purg is a renowned external expert on academic quality and was president of the Slovenian Quality Assurance Agency Council during 2019-2022 when he also served as member of the Higher Education Council of the Republic of Slovenia. He co-authored the Slovenian Higher Education Strategy 2021-2030 and was a member of the Expert Committee for Intermedia Art at the Slovenian Ministry of Culture. He led the interdisciplinary collective Bobnars United with over a hundred music events, research projects and intermedia productions between 2001 and 2006, as well as conceived anti-consumerism interventions within the Podgana PPP street performance group.
