Ten years ago this road was called “the desert road “, today it is a highway and both sides, farms of cotton., olive trees, fruits, all growing in sand. The Nubarea region goes as far as 50 km from highway! -various government programs to improve farming techniques and test crops for farming in the desert, education and scientific programs are held in Nubarea region. - the basic and common to all these programs is to inhabit a population which would potentially stay here as farmers. Mohamed Ramadan Abd Zah: he read in the newspapers that in Nubarea (desert ) region the government is giving 2,5 ha of the desert with a small house to everybody who finished education in agriculture, is under 36 years old, has a family and is without a job... The first years the project guaranties all expert advise and financial monthly support (16 US $). 45 000 people are now farming under an 11 - year running project. After three years his profit with farming is allowing him to put money on the side: “I will stay here and buy another 5 fedans of land.” He has organized himself with neighbour farmers to share tools ... life is better than what I cold expect from staying in the suburbs of Cairo.” |
