The city of the Dead - Cairo’s graveyard is due to overpopulation also a residential area . Nobody knows how many people live in the tombs of Cairo’s graveyard (between 200 000 and 1 million). They live here because it is less crowded, cleaner, less polluted and much cheeper. The contract between the owner of the tomb and the family living in it is simple - over the week days the family can live in the tomb and care for the roof, walls, garden, surrounding... on Friday when the owner’s family comes to give respect to the dead, the living family prepares the place for celebration and goes out. It is for sure much better than living under some stairs in an apartment house or if they are lucky on some roof, or in ta cardboard box in a very pure districts like Shubra, Imbabue or the Coptic part.
