Air view of first 30 km of canal Toshka
In the south of Egypt 60 kilometers from the Sudanese border an irrigation canal is being built. The Egyptian officials in Cairo describe it as the project that will turn one of the most inhospitable parts of Sahara into a blooming garden with industrial cities and large farms that will be built around the new Nile delta. They talk about a new Nile 300 kilometers long, the largest pumping station ever build and a new civilization that will emerge using the water from the Nasser lake to connect the overcrowded Nile valley with the oases on the Libyan border. In the next twenty years between 5 and 10 million people should move into the hart of the Sahara desert. They would move from the overcrowded cities, where pollution and one of the highest population densities in the world are perpetuating a situation of constant misery.
