Civil Society
BU regularly supports various initiatives in the field of civil society
and takes part in benefit concerts. Through our profound explorations
of the African and other traditional music (as well as multimedia) cultures
the collective aspects on creativity and social engagement of the group
are being continually fostered. The performances and actions in public
space directly address up-to-date problems, as for example the wrongness
and falsity of many a war conflict (especially lately the one in Irak
and its contexts) or our country's participation in NATO. The action "BOBNI
NE BOMBE!" (Drums, Not Bombs!) called for a deeper reflection
of the then events and discourses, by taking part in the all-Slovenian
initiative "NE NATO, MIR
NAM DAJTE!" ("Not NATO, Give Us Peace!") we were trying
to point at some better alternatives for our future.
In the last couple of years we have also been supporting "Million
Marijuana March" as well as the annual gay and lesbian manifestation
of "Ljubljana
Pride" that, in Latvian Riga, entitled us "ambassadors of
diversity". A slightly different yet similarly motivated project
is definitely "BUmBUs" (2003 - 2005),
a project trying to give an own and intensive experience of rhythm and
foreign cultures to the various "deprived groups" that in turn
can teach "us" valuable lessons of alternative perception and
communication.
